Things that we can count 1, 2, 3, etc...are called countable nouns.
Here are some examples:
a dog, three dogs
my brother, my two brothers
a computer, a few computers
a city, several big cities
For singular nouns we tend to just say a/an, paired with the noun.
Such as: a girl, or an apple.
If the noun begins with a consonant (b,c,d,f...etc) we should use "a".--->a tree, a ball, a bicycle
If the noun begins with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) we need to use "an".---> an orange, an umbrella, an ice cream cone.
For plural nouns, we tend to just add s, or es, (ies, if the noun ends in y) and sometimes a number of or determiner to make it be know that there is more than one.
Examples with s: boys and girls, dogs andcats
Examples with es: branches, beaches
Examples with ies: bunnies, hobbies
Examples with a number: three basketballs, 4 trucks, five balloons
Examples with a determiner: my parents, a few apples, some oranges
Uncountable nouns
These are things which we cannot count directly, and often will need a determiner or a measure word before saying the noun.
Some examples of uncountable nouns are: Weather words: weather, thunder, lightning, rain, snow Ideas and experiences: advice, information, progress, news, luck, fun, work Materials and substances: water, rice, silver, gold, juice, equipment For these nouns, we don't needa/an or numbers neither is plural form used directly.
So, how can we make these into plural form? In many cases we can add a measure word in advance.
For example: 2 bowls of rice, 1 bottle of milk, 3 cups of orange juice.
Common mistakes... ❌ Our team gave him some informations about the project.
In this example although it is ok to use "some", however we need not add the "s" here, as "information" is deemed uncountable.
So the correct way to say this would be:
✅ Our team gave him some information about the project.
If using a measure word we could also say:
✅ Our team gave him 3 pieces of new information about the project.
Another example:
❌ We checked some literatures but we couldn't find a suitable method.
Here's one example how to make it correct.
✅ We checked some literature regarding that, but we couldn't find a suitable method.
