Imagine you're throwing a dart from a long distance. What are the chances of it hitting the bullseye (the exact center of the target)?
A long shot is an idiom that's usually used to describe something that has a very small chance of happening or succeeding, a bet that has a low probability of winning.
It's unlikely, but still possible.

For example:
▪️ I know it's a long shot because of his busy schedule, but maybe I can convince him to help me with this project.
▪️ Landing such a high-paying job is a long shot but I'm still going to give it a try.

A: Do you know anyone who can help me with that?
B: It's a long shot, but I could ask my supervisor if he has time. He's definitely an expert in this field.
